An elevator attach bracket let go in flight. What came apart underneath it wasn't a bolt or a rivet; it was glue.
Background: On January 19, 2021, a True Flight AA‑5 Traveler lost its outboard elevator attach bracket in flight, resulting in loss of elevator control and substantial damage. Investigators found corrosion and delamination in the horizontal stabilizer skin bondlines, a bonded‑joint failure, not a mechanical fastener failure.
That distinction matters, and it goes back to how these airplanes were designed. The AA-1 Yankee and its AA-5 derivatives were built around bonded aluminum construction from the outset, adhesive-bonded skin over a honeycomb wing and fuselage structure, engineered to eliminate rivets without sacrificing strength. The horizontal stabilizer's bonded skin, and the elevator attach bracket built into it, are part of that same design approach, not an isolated repair joint. All AA-1, AA-1A, AA-1B, AA-1C, and AA-5 Traveler airplanes share this stabilizer design and the same elevator attachment method. According to the FAA, the bond adhesive itself holds up structurally over the decades, but corrosion and freezing moisture intrusion can compromise the bond joint around it, leading the skin to delaminate from the underlying structure. Once that separation starts, the visible symptoms (buckling, rust, prior repairs) can be subtle enough to miss on a routine walk-around.
That's exactly what multiple field reports confirmed: bondline inspections simply weren't being performed thoroughly enough during routine 100-hour and annual inspections to catch this before it became a structural problem.
What the AD Requires: AD 2021-14-12 mandates a detailed inspection of the horizontal stabilizers, with particular attention to the bondlines, within the next 25 hours TIS or at the next scheduled 100-hour/annual inspection, whichever comes first. Inspectors are looking for cracks, buckles, corrosion, delamination, rust, or evidence of previous repair. If anything turns up, the aircraft can't fly again until the affected part is repaired or replaced per True Flight Aerospace Service Bulletin SB-195, Revision A.
Notably, a special flight permit is explicitly prohibited under this AD; there's no ferrying an affected airplane to a repair facility once a defect is confirmed. And while the manufacturer's service bulletin asks operators to report compliance back to True Flight, the FAA AD doesn't carry that requirement forward, so a completed inspection here leaves no external paper trail beyond what the shop itself records.
The Scope That Almost Expanded: AD 2021-14-12 wasn't the last word on this issue. In December 2021, an FAA NPRM proposed a repetitive, fleet‑wide bondline inspection for the entire airplane and adding AA‑5A and AA‑5B models. Owners, mechanics, AOPA, and the Grumman Owners & Pilots Association argued that the issue traces to the pre‑1977 “purple glue” adhesive, not bonded construction generally, and that the accident reflected incorrectly executed maintenance, not a procedural gap. The FAA agreed and withdrew the proposal in April 2022. The result: AD 2021‑14‑12 remains exactly as issued, a one‑time stabilizer inspection on five models.
Why It Matters: This AD is a useful reminder that "structural integrity" doesn't only mean rivets, spars, and bolts; bonded structure ages differently, and its failure mode can be far less visible during a routine inspection than a cracked fitting or a sheared bolt. That's precisely what tripped up the inspections here: the failure wasn't caught because inspectors weren't looking, but because they weren't looking deep enough.
It's also a fleet-sustainment story. With 1,113 U.S.-registered airplanes affected and this design dating back decades, this AD sits squarely in the aging-GA-fleet reality: older bonded airframes, a manufacturer far smaller than the legacy OEM that originally built them, and a repair process that depends on a fairly narrow set of parts and know-how remaining available and current.
There's also a documentation wrinkle worth flagging for anyone reviewing compliance records on these airframes. The AD formally incorporates only True Flight SB-195, Revision A, by reference; that's the sole document listed in paragraph (l), Material Incorporated by Reference. But SB-195A itself doesn't contain all repair instructions. If delamination is found, the bulletin directs the mechanic to "accomplish step C or D of SK-125B," a separate document that never appears in the AD's own incorporated-material list. A shop that repairs a delaminated bondline per SK-125B is doing exactly what the AD requires. Still, that document sits one layer removed from what the AD formally cites, tucked inside the instructions of the document the AD does cite.
For the auditors and IAs: if a logbook entry on one of these airframes reads "AD 2021-14-12 complied with," would that tell you whether the repair, if one was needed, actually followed SK-125B's specific procedures, or would you have to track down a document the AD itself never names to find out? And if you're looking at an AA-5A or AA-5B with no bondline inspection anywhere in its records, would you know that's not a compliance gap, that the FAA proposed exactly that kind of inspection for those models and withdrew it, leaving them outside any AD requirement on this issue entirely?
