Some maintenance problems don’t announce themselves with a broken part or a visual defect. Instead, they start with a question: Were the original test results even valid? That is exactly the issue driving AD 2026-10-18 for the Embraer Phenom 300, which takes effect July 6, 2026.The FAA adopted this AD after Brazil's ANAC discovered that incorrect testing procedures were used for some Phenom 300 horizontal stabilizer backlash checks. Because these aircraft were signed off on unreliable data, a latent risk remains. Too much backlash in the hinge points or pitch trim actuator attachments can trigger severe aeroelastic vibration, threatening structural integrity and the airplane's controllability.
Field Notes: The AD mandates compliance with Embraer SB 505-27-0034 (Rev. 02), which is structured as a decision tree rather than a single task. The process begins with a functional check of the horizontal stabilizer backlash across both the left and right roll and pitch axes, where the strict limit is 0.034°.
If all measurements fall within this limit, no further action is required. However, if the backlash on any axis exceeds 0.034°, operators must perform corrective actions ranging from replacing the hinge point and pitch trim actuator rod-end attachment parts to replacing the pitch trim actuator itself.
Credit is available for prior accomplishment under Embraer SB 505-27-0034 original issue or Rev. 01. Operators who complied early should confirm their records clearly document the specific actions completed.
Compliance splits by serial number group: Group 1 aircraft (the earlier production block) must complete the inspection within 12 months or 750 flight hours of the AD's effective date, whichever comes first. Group 2 gets 24 months or 1,000 flight hours.
By the Numbers: 41 Phenom 300s on the U.S. registry are affected. Inspection alone runs 16 labor hours at $1,360. If all conditional repairs are needed, the high-case cost reaches $14,950 per airplane, though Embraer's warranty coverage may offset the full amount for work performed at an authorized center.
